Data Backup and Disaster Recovery

The numbers are startling. An IDC study done a few years ago indicates that 40% of small businesses do not back up their data at all. Roughly 60% of companies that lose their data close their doors within a year. Companies that think their backups are working fine often find out that when they actually need to use the data, it is unavailable. That is because many backups actually fail and just as many restore operations fail due to bad tapes or disks.

Unless you are actively monitoring your backups and consistently testing the restoration of that data, you are gambling with the future of your business. If you do nothing else with your technology, you MUST draft a disaster recovery plan that spells out how you protect your data from loss and perhaps more importantly, how your business continues to function if you lose that data. The most critical factors to include are:

  1. Locate all critical data to include in the backup process. Centralize your data storage whenever possible.
  2. Schedule regular backups and test the restore process once a month.
  3. Make sure you are taking the backups offsite on a regular basis.
Clarity Technology Group, Inc. works with small businesses to implement a Disaster Recovery plan in writing. The process is not difficult, but you as the business owner need to actively participate to make it a successful endeavor.
